The Use of Dental Implants in Today's Dentistry | Dental Care

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

Dental implants have been used since ancient times. Archaeologists have found shells implanted in jawbones found in prehistoric graveyards. However, modern technology dates from the early 1950s, when Dr. Leonard Linkow began to use fixed, root-like stabilizers for tooth replacements.

Like an original root, an implant is fixed solidly to the jaw bone. In the early days of this technology, a thin blade was inserted in the bone or a root-like device was screwed to surrounding bone tissue. Today the artificial roots are fused to bone by ossification, making the device secure in the jaw socket. Similar ossification occurs when hip or knee replacement surgery is done.

An implant is used as a base for a crown, which will be placed once fusion has solidly set the implant. It can also be a stabilizer for dentures or bridges which replace teeth lost to decay or periodontal disease. Many denture-stabilizing devices are less than 3mm in diameter and are called mini-implants. Orthodontists also use these to regulate the movement of a tooth or teeth which are moved slightly in order to prevent crowding or to correct the bite of the patient.

The Facts on Laser Teeth Whitening | Dental Care

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Teeth darken for a number of different reasons. Reasons may include habits such as smoking, drinking tea, coffee or other dark caffeinated drinks. Many people turn to whitening toothpaste to help lighten the damage that occurs because of the staining. However, these toothpastes and ordinary dentist cleaning will not change the fundamental color of your teeth. This is why laser teeth whitening have become so popular with people who are looking for a brighter, whiter smile. You may be wondering how it works.

How does this laser treatment work? Well, a gel full of agents will be placed on a tray that fits over your teeth. Once the tray is placed on the teeth a laser light is focused on the tray to activate all of these agents for a whiter smile. The agents within the gel only work on enamel and do not change the color of any fillings of bondings you may have.

Dental Implants Cost | Dental Care

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Many things can influence the price of dental implants. One influencing factor is the type of dental implant. For instance, immediate dental implants can cost more than traditional dental implants because more time is dedicated to the surgical procedure by the dental implant surgeon.

Another major determining factor is the dental implant manufacturer. There are several reputable dental implant manufacturers in the United States such as NobelBiocare, Astra, 3i, Zimmer and Straumann. Many of the dental implant systems made by these manufacturers are copied and mimicked by others overseas in Mexico, China, India and other parts of the world. These dental implants can have the same exact look, fittings and parts as the original implant making it difficult at times even for the experienced dental implant surgeon to tell the difference. These implants are referred to as knock-offs or copies and they cost a fraction of what the original implant costs. This makes it easier for some dentists to offer cheaper dental implants but at a higher long term cost to the patient.
