Dental Clinic Makes Dental Treatment Cost Friendly

All alone in the small waiting room of the dental clinic, yet smiling broadly, sat a young black haired woman. There was only one dental chair inside the clinic, and it was occupied by a middle aged woman whose teeth were being observed by a young dentist. Dental care was a financial impossibility for her had it not been for the clinic’s low cost services.

43 years ago, a dental clinic of a private non profit organization was started and presently continues to operate. There was a health clinic actively operating in the clinic for many years, and it mainly catered to pregnant women and infants in the organization’s building. Children can go to the clinic and expect to be provided with dental care. The foundation that a woman left us in her will and other private donations were what funded the operation of the clinic. A year ago, when the foundation was depleted, we reexamined our services and found that a lot of them were being duplicated by other agencies. The clinic was closed because of no more funds to continue its services.

Since dentistry is not provided as one of the medical needs of low income persons, they decided on an economical move to rent the main building and remodel the garage. $10,000 in donations was raised by the organization to change what once was a garage into a dental office. Most of the used equipment for the office had already been given to the clinic by dentists for the earlier dental clinic.

Prospective patients must come to the clinic for an interview to determine if they are eligible for low cost care. To avoid competition with other area dentists, the cl

inic rejects people who make enough for private dental care. With a sliding scale, the clinic can determine who is qualified for the clinic’s low cost services and can decide how much to charge them. How much a person makes and how many are in his family determines the fee scale.

For families with monthly income of $1,000 or more and consisting of not more than four members, dental care at the clinic is out of the question. If that same family made $800 to $1,000 every month, then any family member can avail of dental examination and pay only $8. Those families that earn only $800 a month are charged an examination fee of $5. A dental examination done by private Santa Fe dentists would cost from $15 to $20.

40 and 50 year olds are showing up at the clinic, and you know through observation that they haven’t had much dental care. A lot of the patients in the clinic are children. Children who were eligible for federally funded special programs of the county got to enjoy dental treatments early in the winter. Majority of clinic fees if not all are paid for by one program.

In a week, around 20 patients are scheduled, but the dentists can handle many more. When dentists were kept waiting for patients who failed to keep their appointments, the secretary started scheduling appointments on specific days but not specific times. Patients who come on the day of their appointment are seen on a first come, first served basis. We teach a lot of personal oral hygiene to everybody who comes in. Those patients who have never used toothbrushes and dental floss are provided these things by the clinic. On the next appointment, their teeth usually look much better.

The best course of action, however, is to avoid the need for such services by properly caring for your dog’s teeth. If you can avoid unnecessary pain and discomfort for your furry friend, you should do so. Preventative doggie dental care can save you money as well. Doggie dental procedures can be quite costly.
