Dental Clinic Makes Dental Treatment Cost Friendly

With a big smile on her face, a young black haired woman sat by herself in the small waiting room of the dental clinic. A dentist was checking the teeth of the occupant of the only dental chair in the clinic, which was a middle aged woman. Thanks to the low cost services of the clinic, she is able to get dental care which she otherwise couldn’t afford.

The dental clinic is a project of a private non profit organization that has operated for 43 years. The clinic had a health clinic made for women who were pregnant as well as infants in that organization’s building. Children also have access to dental care at the clinic. We’ve always been funded by private donations, and for many years we had a foundation that a woman left us in her will. When that foundation ran out a year ago, we reexamined the services we were offering, and found that many of them were being duplicated by other agencies. The clinic was closed because of no more funds to continue its services.

Since dentistry is not provided as one of the medical needs of low income persons, they decided on an economical move to rent the main building and remodel the garage. $10,000 in donations was raised by the organization to change what once was a garage into a dental office. Since equipment had been donated by dentists previously for the old dental clinic, these were the ones used for the office.

Low cost care is given to those who pass an interview. To avoid competition with other area dentists, the clinic rejects people who make enough for private dental care. Using a sliding scale, the clinic determines who can avail of the clinic’s services and how much they would be charged. How much to c

harge is based on how many people are in the person’s family as well as how much the person is getting from his job.

For example, a family of four with a monthly income of $1,000 or more would not be eligible for care at the clinic. For that same family to receive $8 dental examination for its members, their monthly income should be from $800 to $1,000. For $5, a family that makes less than $800 a month can avail of dental examination. An average of $15 to $20 is spent by people who go to private Santa Fe dentists for examinations.

40 and 50 year olds are showing up at the clinic, and you know through observation that they haven’t had much dental care. Mostly children are the patients in the clinic. Those kids who got treatment from clinic dentists early in the winter were those who qualified for federally funded county special programs. The cost of all the dental services and treatment is usually covered by one program.

The clinic’s dentists accommodate 20 patients weekly, but they can still accommodate many more. When a lot of patients did not show up at the times they were supposed to show up for their dental appointments, the secretary began to schedule appointments without giving specific times but still giving specific days. Dental services will be given to patients on a first come, first servd basis on the day of their appointment. We instruct every person who comes in how to take good care of their teeth. Those patients who have never used toothbrushes and dental floss are provided these things by the clinic. When these patients come for their next scheduled appointment, they will have improved teeth.
